Question the Message
Question the Message is a website developed by the Vermont Department of Health to increase alcohol awareness to youth, specifically how the advertising industry targets youth with "alcopops," and the warm and fuzzy imagery Anheuser-Bush has used to embed its brand (who can think of a Clydesdale horse without thinking of Budweiser?). The website teaches kids to "question the message" of advertising and the media, and uses a kid-friendly website with all kinds of contests, games, text-messages, downloadable phone rings, 3-D glasses that allow viewers to "decode" hidden messages (just like the hidden messages of advertising), and has grand prizes of Wii Station and an iPod Nano, among other things. If you're 13-17, you can win prizes, and engage in this fun and informative and highly media-literate website. The Quintown Prevention Partnership is hosting several events, including an Ice Cream Social in Bethel (stay tuned--coming soon!) to "start the conversation" about underage drinking, and spreading the word. By Mary Anderson. The pizza business is nothing new for Jim Fisher of Bethel’s Cockadoodle Pizza Café. He started working in one when he was 14 or 15 years old. Postcard Fair ‘Creates Community Pride
Historical Society’s Postcard Fair ‘Creates Community Pride’ By Mary Anderson. For the second year in a row, the Bethel Historical Society sponsored a successful Postcard and History Fair, this one held May 24 at the Whitcomb High School gym. Nick Nikolaidis, coordinator of the event, said that in addition to being a fundraiser for the Bethel Historical Society, the event "creates community pride and brings the community together." He noted that most of the 14 vendors were repeats from the year before, which showed that they, too, enjoyed the show.
