Bethel Vet Wins Silver and Bronze
By Sandy Vondrasek. About the same time the 2008 Summer Olympics were winding down in Beijing, a 63-year-old Bethel man was heading into five days of competition. Reginald Rogers brought home a silver and a bronze medal—for nine-ball billiards and horseshoes, respectively—from his second trip to the National Veterans Golden Age Games, held this year August 20-24 in Indianapolis, Ind. A Navy veteran of the Vietnam era, Rogers earned two of the five medals awarded to the "Green Mountain Boys" team, all of them veterans receiving treatment at the Veterans Center Hospital in White River Junction. Rogers told The Herald this week that he missed the gold for billiards by just one game, having won 35 games in 11 matches before losing the final game. Aloha!… From Bethel
By Robin Palmer. On Tuesday, participants in the Gifford Adult Day Program in Bethel celebrated with a Hawaiian luau. The festive décor and meal that included barbecued pineapple, non-alcoholic piña coladas, and upside down cakes, was thanks to in part to a suggestion from Rochester’s Rosanna Carlos. The 83-year-old adult day participant told Director Judy Santamore that, if she could go anywhere, Hawaii would be it. "Her face just beamed when she said it," recalled Santamore Tuesday. In leis and grass skirts, the staff, including Santamore, put together the luau in honor of Carlos’s request and in celebration of Hawaii becoming a state in August of 1959. Question the Message
Question the Message is a website developed by the Vermont Department of Health to increase alcohol awareness to youth, specifically how the advertising industry targets youth with "alcopops," and the warm and fuzzy imagery Anheuser-Bush has used to embed its brand (who can think of a Clydesdale horse without thinking of Budweiser?). The website teaches kids to "question the message" of advertising and the media, and uses a kid-friendly website with all kinds of contests, games, text-messages, downloadable phone rings, 3-D glasses that allow viewers to "decode" hidden messages (just like the hidden messages of advertising), and has grand prizes of Wii Station and an iPod Nano, among other things. If you're 13-17, you can win prizes, and engage in this fun and informative and highly media-literate website. The Quintown Prevention Partnership is hosting several events, including an Ice Cream Social in Bethel (stay tuned--coming soon!) to "start the conversation" about underage drinking, and spreading the word. Cockadoodle Pizza Cafe Expands
By Mary Anderson. The pizza business is nothing new for Jim Fisher of Bethel’s Cockadoodle Pizza Café. He started working in one when he was 14 or 15 years old. Apparently he has learned a lot in those years, because he has made the restaurant into such a successful pizza establishment that he has been able to expand within just one year of taking ownership. Postcard Fair ‘Creates Community Pride
Historical Society’s Postcard Fair ‘Creates Community Pride’ By Mary Anderson. For the second year in a row, the Bethel Historical Society sponsored a successful Postcard and History Fair, this one held May 24 at the Whitcomb High School gym. Nick Nikolaidis, coordinator of the event, said that in addition to being a fundraiser for the Bethel Historical Society, the event "creates community pride and brings the community together." He noted that most of the 14 vendors were repeats from the year before, which showed that they, too, enjoyed the show.
