Ted Brady Guest Speaker in Bethel
Leahy Staffer Guest Speaker At Legislative Breakfast. By Mary Anderson. Senator Leahy’s staffer, Ted Brady, was a guest speaker at the legislative breakfast held in Bethel Monday morning. Brady spoke about what moved Leahy to vote to appropriate $305,000 for renovations on the Bethel Town Hall, including community commitment and the potential the building has in the life of the town. He concluded with a reference to the current move "I Am Legend," joking that "we all know it (the town hall) will be the safe place to hang out in case of a worldwide virus." Bethel Fire Dept. Gets Grant From State
Bethel Fire Dept. Gets Grant From State’s Public Safety Dept. By Mary Anderson The Bethel Fire Department has received the good news that it has been awarded $13,341 from the State of Vermont’s Department of Public Safety, Division of Vermont Homeland Security. This money is specifically awarded to help the fire department upgrade their radios and communications system. When added to the amount received through a FEMA grant a few weeks earlier, the fire department has now raised over $20,700 in grants. According to assistant chief David Aldrighetti, the amount remaining to be raised with taxpayers’ money would be around $16,500. Aldrighetti is quick to point out that "the two grants saved the taxpayers a little over 50%!" Writer Learns To Love Preshistoric plant
By Chris Costanzo. Over the past year I have become emotionally involved with a house plant. A pre-historic houseplant. I hadn’t planned on it, but my feelings crept up on me slowly to the point that I now look at her a lot, and care deeply for her welfare. Frankly, I’ve grown to love her. Wilma is a Wollemi pine. She’s a plant that was long thought to be extinct. From fossil evidence it’s known that the Wollemi pine lived and thrived over 90 million years ago, during what is known as the Cretaceous Period, when the dinosaurs roamed the earth, and it was widely distributed, even thriving in Antarctica. Criminal Mastermind foiled by a dolly
Press Release from Vermont State Police is as follows: On this date and time, Vermont State Police received a call from a CVPS work crew on Camp Brook Rd. in the Town of Bethel (Windsor County) Vermont advising that that some unknown male ran up to their truck advising to call 911 because someone was breaking into their home. After meeting with complainant, Justin McCoart about the burglary he advised that Ezra Lowe here after referred to as the defendant was the one who burglarized his residence. McCoart advised that the defendant entered his house through a window and stole an I-Pod, a Maglight flashlight, and a Pink Panther stuffed animal. When asked how he knew the defendant stole these items he advised that the Pink Panther stuffed animal was still in the defendant’s vehicle at his house when he went over to question him about it. Vermont State Police went to the defendant’s house and observed the Pink Panther stuffed animal in the front seat of the defendant’s vehicle. After making contact with the defendant and his girlfriend inside the residence he surrendered the I-Pod. The defendant advised that the complainant must have left the I-Pod at his house because he had no idea how it got there. The defendant was arrested for Burglary and Possession of Stolen Property and was released on a criminal citation to appear in Windsor District Court on 03-04-2008 at 0800 hours to answer to the above charges.

Bethel becomes famous worldwide
I Am Legend: Will Smith's latest movie ends up at a church in Bethel, Vermont. Even though the movie was not filmed in Bethel, Vermont, a better place of refuge would have been the Bethel Town Hall, located in the center of this 229 year old central Vermont town, right next to the White River. This beautiful Queen Anne style brick building was built in 1892 as a community gathering place, a function it served until the 1970's. For almost 10 years now citizens have been working to rehabilitate, renovate and restore the building so it can be used for community and municipal events - everything from concerts and plays and weddings to meetings and Red Cross blood drives and classes. By 2007 we had finally raised enough money to strengthen the structural elements of the roof and put a new roof on the building and repair the bell tower, which cost about $150K. But there is more to do. The brick facade and windows need repair, mechanical systems need to be replaced, and internal space needs structural repair, restrooms and handicapped access. We need about $1 million to complete the project. Bethel is a small town, with a population of about 2,000, and once we have paid for our school and roads, there is little money left, even for things like restoring the town hall at the heart of the town. We would love to receive help from anyone who senses the value of a community gathering place and who believes that unique architecture should be preserved and utilized, rather than replaced by ugly boxes. Bethel's Main Street still looks like the 19th century and the Town Hall is the jewel of the street. Help restore and preserve it so that everyone from Will Smith to our neighbors can again gather inside. To help, please contact Bethel Town Manager, Dell Cloud at 802-234-9340, OR send your TAX DEDUCTIBLE donation directly to Bethel Town Hall Fund, Bethel Town Offices, 134 South Main Street, Bethel, VT 05032. For more information see the "1892 Fund" at: http://www.betheltownhallvt.org/ Gratefully yours, Friends of the Bethel Town Hall
